New to Forging but not to metalwork.

Hello, I'm Aric Armbruster. I'm 31, from southwest Pennsylvania.
I'm here to learn about something i've wanted to do for as long as i can remember. I come from a family tree that have been tradesmen and craftsmen as far back as i've been able to look, except for my dad, i love him, he's a great guy but he can't even change a lightbulb. I started out with what i could learn from my Grandfathers about metal and woodworking. I don't know of any blacksmiths in the family, but there have been metal workers, and mainly wood workers. i'm more into metal work, and can do a bit of both.
my dayjob is autobody collission repair. I get alot of scrap metal from that and alot of the bodywork tools can carry over to other work.   I spend most of my paycheck on tools both for work and home.
I'm here because i'm going to finally start making my first forge. My grandfathers have both passed, and i have reciently moved in to my one grandfathers house and plan to be here a while and decided i'm ready to start my blacksmithing dream. i found this site through searching how to start making my forge. you all seem nice and i'm looking forward to hopefully making some friends and learning a great skill both on my own and from some great people.  so Hello all

Welcome to the forum Aric. There are a lot of good friendly people here from well experienced right down to newbies. So ask any questions you need to, someone will have the answer.
Leaf and coil springs make good knives as do drive shafts so you are in the right place to get some good scrap steel for free. Even old body panels can be used for sheet metal work like coal shovels. So join in and have fun.

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

Thank you guys! yeah there are a ton of good sources of usable metal from scrap parts on cars. first things first, i need to make a forge. i thought i had what i wanted to make one but the one old water tank i really wanted to use is galvanized so thats a no go. so im asking and looking around for an old air tank. and i'm looking for a blower. i'm sure i could put something together from all the stuff i have laying around but i'd rather do it right the first time. tho i'm betting i'll end up making more then one forge. i should probably make a brake drum forge just to get me started. God knows i have enough brake drums and rotors laying around. Thanks for the welcome and i'll be here poking around.

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

For a blower you can use the heater blower from a scrap car and run it off an old car battery or a 12volt transformer.

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

my first blower was a leaf blower with a rheostat (dimmer switch)on it.....it worked great.

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

i did like trent said got my first one from Granger, then i took out a gas air handler and it had one in it,so now i have a few of them! if you have a air conditioning shop near you see if they have the clear out blowers for gas air handlers they have replaced and are going to scrap out and give them 10.00 for it,the best they will get is .08 a pound! most of them will not save them to resale they want to put a new one in.i don't see to many of them in florida they use more gas up north!

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

wow. sounds like i have alot of options on findiung a blower. Thqnk you all for the advice. i'm going to look around and see what i come up with. i guess all in all i just need something to get air to the coals. so i'm sure out of all the methods you've come up with i won't be limited on the source. you guys are very nice and helpfull. i'm very appreciative.

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

I use an old kitchen extractor bolted on the side of my forge. Even on the lowest speed I have to bleed off excess air. To clean the pipe I just pull the gate valve off the front and switch the blower on high speed to blast the ash out.

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

Thats a really neat design. i have an old ammo box just like that. Tho i'll need something longer for swords. The fan idea is pretty interesting as well. what do you think the best lining for the forge would be. i've read several different types of lining that people have used and i'm sure it's mostly preference but out of curiosity what would you suggest?

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

Thanks for the welcome. looked it up and thay have both at the anvilfire store website. I was looking around some more and found Durablanket S, which seems to have the same properties but at a fraction of the price at http://www.infraredheaters.com/insulati.htm   I don't know much but it looks like it would be comparable to Kao Wool.
anyway, i'll keep that in mind if i make a gas forge. right now i'm looking to make a charcoal forge. just now got done making a charcoal-making barrel like Trent showed in his youtube video. Figured i'd start working on the easy stuff that i had supplies laying around for while i figure out my forge.

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

A sand, dirt, clay mix works fine. I think it's described in the... Air Tank Forge.. post. I used it when I first built my forge. I have clay in the soil so just added 1 part sand to 2 parts soil and just enough water to mix a very stiff  plaster and shape a long narrow channel for the fire box. You can also add wood ash to the mix.

ok, so it really is that Easy. I think i was over complicating the idea that i'd need some kind of special stuff. haha. Just like most things, their way easier if you just go at it and don't overcomplicate them.

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

Your right, the biggest knife I can make in the ammo box forge is a 15" bowie..... 10" blade + 5" handle. The good thing about the dirt based refactory is any repairs can be patched in easily with the same mix.

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

you can use other stuff to(

Phoenix1967

Air tank Forge Build along

Now grab your shovels. Most peoples back yards have clay in them, if you dig a bit. Here, about a foot of topsoil covers that good 'ole Carolina Brickmakin' clay! If you dont have clay in your area, buy a bag of the cheapest clay kitty litter you can find, and soak it for a day in water... mix it in your backyard dirt. It works great.)

Re: New to Forging but not to metalwork.

the clay and sand mix sounds like it'll work for me. i found a spot in the yard thats got a good bit of clay. i found it when i was planting a tree. it's by the road and people will think i'm nuts but that won't be anything new haha. Thanks for all the advice.
