For The Newcomer

Welcome to

Dim lights

We are a community of blacksmiths that is built around a video web site, the only one of its kind. Founded in 2007 from a few videos on a place called SpikedHumor.com, the site has evolved into a truly unique place. We host forums, tutorials, and how to's for everyone but the real meat of  the site lies withing the self produced video library. Since its inception, people from all over the world have received a solid education on the craft through the website. As somebody coming to the site for the first time, there are a few things I'd like you to keep in mind.

1. We provide as much content as we can FREE of charge. This includes forums, basic videos, tutorials, and chat rooms. In this day and age, its hard to sneeze without it costing money and the website is no different. Our members graciously support this work, not only to further thier own educations but to spread this craft to new and fertile minds. We welcome anyone that wants to learn and will bend over backwards to get you into the craft. All we ask is that if you get something good out this site, help support it with a membership!

2. HERE BE GOOD FOLKS. The people of this website come from all around the world. They have many different levels of experience but all are here in good faith to listen and learn from one another. This is what makes us a community. We are not faceless type from behind a computer screen but friends from across the globe. Mind your manners and treat others with respect until they prove they don't deserve it! We have a fine sandbox here and welcome all ideas except for two. Politics and Religion are to friendships what microwaves are to Easter Peeps. Of all the things you can speak about here, please check these two at the door!

3. Remember the name Jay Reakirt! That's all you have to do. Jay is the reason that I took up this craft and thus the reason that I am in turn able to teach you. Understand that your education has a lineage and its one that you should be proud of. This knowledge, this history, and this crafts are gifts from those that went before. Earn your keep and keep their memories alive!

4. This website is the culmination of years of work and effort. Even so, we are still young and have kinks to work out. If you have an issue of any sort, please contact an admin and we will work to resolve it immediately. Dammit Jim! We are blacksmiths, not Web Developers!

Now that the basics are out of the way, as a New Person to the site there are a few things you will want to do first. Start by saying hello and introducing yourself in the forums. The regulars here are great people and will answer your question with patience and some form of wisdom. Second, watch the Basics Videos if you have not already. This will give you the ground floor for beginning work as a smith. Third, read through the Member submitted tutorials and see what others have made from junk that might be able to help you. Once you have gone through all of this and tried your hand at the first steps, its time to make a decision. I can tell you without hesitation that the educational material provided through our videos is second to none. Decide if you want to pursue knife making or blacksmithing. Ask other members about the video block that will be most suited for what you want and listen to what they say. Finally, by picking the right videos, you will have a  chance to learn more than most people who spend weeks in classes. Most importantly, you will be able to ask questions not only to other members but directly to Trent himself.

By becoming a part of the site in this way, you not only get good folks to help you out in your craft but you help support this craft. Just by learning and being a member here, you help us preserve this historic craft and the people who made it great!

Thank you for coming to the site and I hope you find your time here worth it.

Trenton Tye
